DeGoogling and UnGoogling The process of “deGoogling” is at the heart of /e/OS’s development. This involves eliminating Google’s presence in every layer of the OS. Key steps include:
Removing Google’s search engine and replacing it with privacy-first search engines.
Replacing Google’s Play Services with microG, ensuring Android app compatibility without Google’s surveillance.
Using open-source alternatives for Google’s NTP, DNS, and geolocation services.
Setting up an anonymous proxy for HERE’s location service following Mozilla’s closure of its Location Services.
Privacy by Design
/e/OS implements “privacy by design” principles at every level of development. From OS to cloud services, user privacy is the core focus.
Privacy in the OS: No mandatory cloud connections, default ad-blocker, and privacy-enhancing defaults.
Privacy in Cloud Services: End-to-end encryption, privacy-patched NextCloud, and avoidance of clear-text storage for conversations and email.
